This legacy of ancient marble sculpture was taken from the Baths of Caracalla, the Forum and the Palatine, was purchased from the del Bufalo family, confiscated (stolen) from several family’s and inherited from Margaret of Austria (widow of Alessandro de’ Medici). The sculpture was used in Rome and Parma by the Farnese family and was transferred to Naples by Ferdinand I, the King of the Two Sicilies. It then became the Museo Archeologico Nazionale of Naples. Many of the other pieces were taken from Pompeii and other sites. |
